I'm upgrading from v3.1 to v3.3 and this stops at 5% every time.  I've uninstalled the manager (v1.2) and reinstalled (rebooting in between and after).  I'm running on Windows Vista 64 bit.

I also tried going to v3.2 instead, but I have the same issue.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I found an old XP computer and the install went smoothly on that.  So for anyone that's having the same issue, maybe Windows XP will work for you too.

I had the same problem on my windows 7 x64 Laptop. On this laptop, I followed Sena's instructions of plugging the smh-10 when asked to. Updating the firmware resulted in nothing more than waiting forever at 5%. On my desktop, I installed the software without ever plugging my SMH-10. Once it was installed, I plugged the SMH-10 in, started the app, and when prompted, pushed the power/phone till it was flashing violet. Install went trought fast and easy, asking me to push the phone button at the beginning of the flashing, and at then end. I did that flawlessly 5 times on 5 different SMH-10, and none would work on my laptop. My laptop has USB3 ports, it's a dell XPS-15 with a I7 processor. My desktop (where the firmware update worked) is a Windows 7 x64 aswell, but it has an older technology in it: Q6600 processor and no fancy usb3 ports. Hope it can help someone! Good luck!

Finally updated my SMH-10 from v3.0 to 3.3 using an old XP computer w/older processor ... wouldn't work with Windows 7, 64 bit and an i5 processor, no matter what the sequence. Hopefully the v4.0 update will work with the new mac manager. :-) Thanks to Kevin and Kim.

At least you can download the manager... I'm stuck in a product registration infinite loop.  Good thing, I already have downloaded the manager to another computer that I can use.

I just successfully installed SMH Manager v.1.2 on my Dell Vostro 1500 running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit).  Once installed, I was able to upgrade (2) SMH10 v.3.1 and (2) SMH10 v.3.2 units to version 3.3.  Initially I did experience some of the same listed above but once uninstalled the original SMH Manager application and reinstalled from the Sena web site, the issues were no longer present.  I now have (4) SMH10 units running firmware version 3.3.

Nothing you suggested changed my Windows 7 installation problems.

The Sena software people need to do more testing to find out why people are having installation problems. Stop denying there is a problem. Last year I used the XP version to program my SMH10B with no problems. FIX YOUR SOFTWARE PROBLEMS!!!  I paid the upgrade fee to cover this.

Not satisfied with you solutions or support.

I'm sure the Sena folks will find a solution for you Wayne.  I was able to upgrade my SMH10B from v3.2 to v3.3 on Win7 64-bit this morning without a problem.

  • I solved my problem with Windows 7 software...

In the device manager tree list I noticed there was a Bluetooth Radio icon->>lower was another Generic Bluetooth Radio icon at the top of my device manager list. (I don't have a Bluetooth radio installed in my laptop). See what I mean on attached screenshot.

I went to this lower icon and right-clicked to update driver. Update the driver from disk option->>have disk. Then pointed to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Sena Technologies\SMH10 Manager\CSRBlueCoreUSB.inf

The usb driver then updated correctly afterwards I was able to update my unit to v3.3.

When is the download site available again ?

And are there some more detailed descriptions on the release notes ? What exactly does the 3way intercom function mean. Could I use my gps and a intercom connection at the same time without switching ?

Thanks for the reply.

I am having the same issue with the firmware update process getting to 5% and hanging. Note: no yellow message box appears prior to this point.

I am using a Dell E6410 running Windows XP.

It seems like this is a fairly common problem. Would it be possible to put troubleshooting steps in the SMH10 Manager Manual?

I tried this on my Asus EEE netbook, with XP.  It just wouldn't work, on any usb port.    So, I tried it one last time, and accidentally left the Sena plugged into port, and had closed SW.  Upon reopening SW (remember, I hadn't disconnected) Bingo !!, it was up and running.  Didn't do a firmware, but did do options changes.

Dan, on the 4.0, is the ringer notification louder?

I sure hope so.  When wearing earplugs, I can hardly hear it, and forget hearing it at 70mph.   Thanks

Can't edit after a post.  So, I was just perusing the 2.2 user guide, and I noticed it indicates bluetooth V2.1  on page 3.   I read somewhere that the new 4.0 FW is bluetooth V3.0.  Is this 2.2 guide supposed to reflect the 4.0 FW?

I'm running Windows Vista 64Bit, I was unable to get the update manager to work on this system   Would not recognize the SMH10 when plugged in.  I went to my old laptop running XP and all is well.

Here are some troubleshooting methods for firmware update.

1. Uninstall previous version of SMH10 Manager if there is newer version available on the web.

2. Make sure to download correct version for your operating system. (We will release MAC version very soon.)

3. I hate to say this but, avoid using Windows Vista if you can. Vista tends to auto-load its default Bluetooth driver and causes great difficulty when attempting to change driver to actual SMH10 driver.

4. Disable/ any internal/external bluetooth hardware connected to PC. For embedded Bluetooth module, you will need to disable from device manager.

5. Make sure to use micro-USB cable that came with SMH10.

6. After firmware SMH10 Manager and driver installation, check you device manager with SMH10 powered and connected to PC. SMH10 should be listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers as "CSR BlueCore Bluetooth". If you do not see this and instead see unrecognizable Bluetooth device listed, you will need to change the driver manually through device properties. Driver location is under program/Sena Technologies/SMH10 Manager.

*On Vista, you may need to use same USB port as you initially installed SMH10 driver with.

SMH10 system alert sound level has not changed from past firmware version.

It is very likely that next SMH10 firmware update will utilize Bluetooth version 3.0.

"  SMH10 system alert sound level has not changed from past firmware version".     One of the main reasons I bought this, is to do phone.  No good to me if I can't hear it.  This, while wearing ear plugs, which all homo sapiens should do when on the road on a bike.  The effects of wind noise, tire noise, not to mention sitting close to exhaust, and on top of engine, all chime in to kill hearing, at say 70mph.  Well over 110 db.  Something an utterly amazing amount of bikers ignore till it's too late.   So, someone who wants to protect hearing, can't hear the alert sound.   nuff said.

Robert, have you considered the possibility that the volume of the ringback sound is controlled by your phone? e.g. have you tried increasing the ringer volume on the phone (with the SMH10 active) and/or tried a different phone?

Dan, thanks for posting the troubleshooting actions above. However, given that I have got past the initial Manager startup sequence (including plugging the SMH into USB and turning the unit on), and the fact that the Manager recognises the current firmware version (3.0), doesn't this mean that the driver is installed OK? (I did try reinstalling the firmware for good measure, but all along it has showed up as CSR BlueCore Bluetooth.)

My issue is that when I click the F/W Update button, and choose the IMG file, and click the Update button it looks like it is doing nothing for about 20-30 seconds or so, and then the progress bar jumps from 0% to 5% and doesn't progress any further. (I have to close the application to try again.) Also, at no stage does the yellow message box (shown in the Manager User's Manual) pop up. Reading some of the other comments above it sounded like I wasn't the only one having this issue, and others resolved it by finding another PC to use - which incidentally is how I am planning on resolving it myself...

Thanks for the input, Nick.   Changing the volume at phone doesn't affect the notification volume at Sena end.  The way I understand bluetooth, is; - The phone doesn't "stream" the notification, but rather, it triggers the built in notification.  That built in notification has surely got to be part of the firmware.  So, it's db level needs to be increased.  I wish there was a way I could CoolEdit that notifier to the level I desire, but I don't know how to work over firmware.  I don't have a clue as to whether it's an mp3, wav., or what format it is.

Not that what my phone does means anything for any other phone, but if I have my phone linked, both the jog dial volume and my phone volume affect the volume at my headset.  A few days ago I went for a ride and had some music going.  I couldn't hear it at speed (and I wear ear plugs).  So when I stopped, I turned up the "media volume" on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S) and the volume changed in my headset.

So I think it works on some phones.

I will clarify SMH10's volume level. SMH10's system sound level can be adjusted from SMH10 only. System sound is all alert tones generated by SMH10 i.e. paring tone, power on/off tone, trigger tone, etc. Relayed audio from another Bluetooth device like phone call and music can be adjusted from audio source itself and from SMH10.

Thanks for that explanation, Dan.      Are the on-board sounds synthesized, or actual wav/mp3 type sound sources?  Thank you.

SMH10 uses SBC codec for stereo streaming which is standard for Bluetooth A2DP connection.

Thanks, but I mean the tones indication what's happening. Ring tone, power on, power off, etc.

@Robert

If you are asking whether system alert tones can be edited by the user, then the answer is system alert tones cannot be altered. Next SMH10 firmware update will include voice prompt option which can replace current system alert tones.

Thanks, Dan.  I spent some time snooping the net, looking for firmware editors, and it's way over my head.  Looks like it has to be done in Linux anyway, and I'm not a Linux guy.  I was hoping for a simple command line editor that would do that.  Looks like KC Wirefree might be capable, for CSR chipset firmware,  But,, $$$$$$$$$.   So, I wait.

Hello fellow Sena members!

I also was having trouble updating firmware for the SMH10B and realized I had to update the manager first. Had 1.1 which was updated to 1.2, I think this was the version, but anyway when I upgraded the manager the download for the firmware for the bluetoothe did what it was suppose to do. I hope this has solved the Windows users problems.

Follow-up question from a Jan 24 2012 comment from a Sena Rep about plans/solutions for possible updates being done by Bluetooth. I have an older model dual set (1+ yrs old) that is not capable of firmware updates at all. I have the coaxial connector not the usb type. Not even sure the firmware update would do anything anyway. My units work just fine for me but, if it improves the functionality I'll update it. Any information would be great.

Hello Kenneth

I don't think the older ones are firmware up-gradable. The Sena has to have a B, I think,  in the SMH-10B. If it has the B, I'm not sure if this is the right letter, but it is the right idea, to be firmware up-gradable. If you did not receive an USB cable with your product, chances are it is not up-gradable. At one time Sena was excepting returns of the older version to get the new firmware capable unit. Hope this was helpful.

Thanks Douglas, I doubt seriously that Sena is still accepting returns on older models. It would be nice if they would send some kind of information about it by email or group message since they know from the registration if the units in question are approved for upgrading to the newer upgradeable models. With or without cost.  Oh well, I'll use mine until they stop working then consider another set. Thanks again for the info.

Can you still get a discount if you have old versions of the SMH10.. I just recently was made aware of this upgradeable version and couldn't believe it! I have two of the old Sena's and would love to be able to get something out of them....

i am of the opinion that if Sena announces they have a Mac version, then it should work. I contacted Tech support 2 days ago and am still waiting for a response.......
